Welcome to the Jackson County School District Moodle Page!
What is Moodle?
Moodle is an Open Source Course Management System (CMS), also known as a Learning Management System (LMS) or a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). It has become very popular among educators around the world as a tool for creating online dynamic websites for their students. The Jackson County School District Moodle page is housed on a dedicated server. This provides us with a safe a secure CMS.
Moodle was created by Martin Dougiamas from Australia. He worked for several years to create software that would help students learn while using the internet. Dougiamas believes in the constructivist view of learning. This means he believes students learn best when they are able to learn through experiences. He wanted to create an online environment where students would be able to explore and learn without a teacher telling them exactly what to do. He released the first version of Moodle in August of 2002, and continues to be a major developer of the CMS even today.

The focus of the Moodle project is always on giving educators the best tools to manage and promote learning, but there are many ways to use Moodle:
Moodle has features that allow it to scale to very large deployments and hundreds of thousands of students, yet it can also be used for a primary school or an education hobbyist. Teachers in the Jackson County School District use Moodle at all grade levels. Students in grades 3-12 use Moodle for assessments and classes.
The Jackson County School District uses the platform to augment face-to-face courses (known as blended learning). The CMS does, however, have the capacity for fully online courses.
Teachers in the Jackson County School District use the activity modules (such as forums, databases and wikis) to build richly collaborative communities of learning around their subject matter (in the social constructionist tradition), as well as assessing learning using assignments or quizzes.
Moodle.org maintains a demonstration site. This page is a full Moodle site with some sample courses that you can try as a teacher, student or even an administrator. Don't worry about making a mess, the whole site is reset to a clean state every hour.
